Scranton, PA – Marywood University senior Lisa Hanselman, the 2009 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Year, has been named Marywood's Senior Student-Athlete of the Year as the Athletics & Recreation Department honored it's student-athletes at their annual end of the year banquet Sunday afternoon on Marywood's campus. Women's Basketball senior Erin Furlong was named the recipient of the Mary Beth Salmon Award for Dedication and Women's Lacrosse junior Alexis Willey was named the 2010 Pacers Club Humanitarian Award winner.
Hanselman (Manheim, PA) closed out her playing career in impressive fashion earning National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region honors for the first time. Hanselman was named the 2009 CSAC Women's Soccer Player of the Year after leading the Pacers with 18 goals and three assists for 39 points. A First-Team All-CSAC selection, Hanselman captained the Pacers to a 14-3-1 overall record and an unbeaten 9-0-1 CSAC regular season record.
A four year starter, Hanselman led the Pacers in scoring in both her junior and senior years and also picked up second-team CSAC honors in 2008. As an art education major, Hanselman was also named to the NSCAA College Scholar Second Team after maintaining a 3.89 grade point average.
Erin Furlong (Albany, NY) was named the recipient of the Mary Beth Salmon Award for Dedication, and award that honors a former field hockey and softball player and goes annually to a student-athlete whose dedication and commitment to his/her sport and Marywood Athletics goes above and beyond the expected. As a senior captain on the women's basketball team, Furlong led the Pacers to the conference playoffs in each of her last two seasons.
Women's Lacrosse standout Alexis Willey (Hummelstown, PA) was named the Pacers Club Humanitarian Award winner. The junior captain has led the Pacers to two consecutive playoff appearances and has been actively involved in the Marywood and local community throughout her career as a student-athlete at Marywood. The Pacers Club annually covers the cost for all student-athletes and coaches to attend the banquet free of charge.
Emily Wentzel (East Earl, PA), a senior field hockey player, was named the winner of the Dr. Jane Farr Award for Excellence in Field Hockey. The award, which is named in honor of the former coach, athletic administrator and retired Chair of Marywood's Health & Physical Education Department, goes annually to a standout field hockey player in recognition of excellence on and off the field of play. Wentzel was a four-year starter for the field hockey team, twice earning All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades while leading the program to playoff appearances in 2008 & 2009.
The Field Hockey team was announced as the winners of the “Pacers Cup” award. The Pacers Cup is a year-long competition between Marywood varsity athletic teams. The competition awards points for student-athlete attendance at other team's games, team grade point average, and participation and attendance in community service projects and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meetings.
Lastly, each team selected a Most Valuable Player (MVP) and recognized graduating seniors. MVP award winners are listed below, but please note that some spring teams (men's lacrosse and men's tennis) have not selected MVPs yet as their programs are still in season. Those MVPs will be announced at the conclusion of their respective seasons.
