Men’s Lacrosse Picked Third in CSAC Preseason Poll

Men's Lacrosse - 2/20/2012 12:24:00 PM

Aston, PA – Marywood University has been selected third in the Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse preseason coaches poll.  The Pacers, who finished as the conference's runner-up last spring, earned 51 votes in the balloting, one shy of Gywnedd-Mercy College.  Cabrini College, who has captured 11 straight conference championships, was tabbed as the preseason favorite.

The Cavaliers, who are ranked No. 16 by Lacrosse Magazine, received all eight (8) first place votes, earning them a perfect, 64 points, to top the poll. "It's an honor to be recognized by the CSAC coaches.  As the conference continues to get better, it will take a more concerted effort in the classroom, on the field, and in the weight room for us to compete with the other teams in the CSAC," said head coach Steve Colfer.  "We are excited about the upcoming season and look forward to the opportunity to defend last year's CSAC championship."

After falling to Marywood in the semifinals of the CSAC championships last season, Gwynedd-Mercy College has been selected to finish second behind the Cavaliers with 52 points.  The Griffins will look to rely on experience as the squad features 10 seniors and four players who earned All-Conference honors last season.

Marywood was picked third in the poll after reaching the title game in 2011, receiving 51 votes.  Under the guidance of first year head coach Scott Dalgliesh, the Pacers will look to return to the championship bout after falling last year to Cabrini 9-6 in a closely contested battle.  Marywood will rely on 2011 All-CSAC honoree defensemen Nick Johnson and John Pelligrini, along with attackman Marcus Janda, to lead the Pacers to their fifth conference playoff berth in as many years.

Immaculata University finished fourth with 38 points, while Centenary College (32), Neumann University (24), Shenandoah University (19) and Rosemont College, in the program's first year of varsity competition, (8) rounded out the voting.

Marywood opens the 2012 season on March 3rd at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA and begins conference play on March 24th at Gwynedd-Mercy.
