Amherst, MA - The Nichols College men's tennis team rewrote the Bison's history books on Friday morning when they defeated Marywood University, 5-0, in the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship First Round at Amherst College. Not only did Nichols win its first NCAA match in its first Championship appearance, but the Bison won the first NCAA event for any sport at the College. Nichols also set the record for most single-season wins in the 68th year of the men's tennis program and extended its program-record win streak to 17 matches, dating back to March 8th.  Marywood closes their season at 11-6.

The Bison (18-3) led, 3-0, after doubles action for the second time in the last three matches – all in postseason play. Despite a slow start, Steve Carella and Brandon Roode gained momentum throughout their top flight match to post an 8-5 win over Todd Doran and Evan Bolus. Isiah Prosper and Justin Deluca rolled to their 12th-straight victory with an 8-2 win over Ethan Jones and Ryan Mulqueen at the third flight. David Drucker and Arsen Gasparyan battled Wyatt Nolan and Daniel Pfafman to an 8-6 victory.

Deluca and Carella quickly took 6-0 first set leads at the fifth and sixth singles flights before being joined with a 6-0 first set win at the second flight by Drucker shortly after. Roode was just finishing his first set – a 6-1 score over Doran – when Deluca and Carella went up, 5-0, in the second set almost simultaneously.

Carella worked through his final game faster, inking a 6-0 match point over Nolan 27 seconds ahead of Deluca, who also bested Jones without surrendering a game.   Bolus had come back on Drucker for a 4-2 second set lead, while Prosper was between sets with Mulqueen at the fourth flight, holding a 6-3 first set advantage. Gasparyan was leading Pfafman at the third flight, 6-1, 2-0, when the match was called.

Marywood, which had won 10 consecutive matches entering the tournament, sees its season end at 11-6 overall after making its third-straight appearance in the NCAA Championships.
