Men's Lacrosse Books Spot in CSAC Championship

Scranton, PA - Second-seeded Marywood University advanced to the Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse championship with an 8-5 victory over No. 3 Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday in the semifinal. Trailing by two at halftime, the Pacers held the Griffins scoreless for the final 39 minutes, 47 seconds and finished with a six-goal run to reach the final for the second consecutive season. 

Joe Magargal made 24 saves in net to keep the Griffins and their 53 total shots at bay. Magargal stopped the second-most saves in a single game in school history, coming just one save short of Jesse Habich's record. Magargal also collected five ground balls.

Marywood (11-4) will face top-seeded Cabrini College Saturday in Radnor, Pa. The time of the game is to be announced Thursday. 

Sam Trill scored three goals and an assist for a game-high four points. With the four points to move into to 173 as a Pacer, Trill moved ahead of teammate Dylan Swope for the school's career points record. 

Rob Maini had a breakout performance with two goals and an assist for three points. Stephen Deiner added a goal and two assist for three points. Dylan Swope supplied two helpers to put him at 172 points for his career. 

Jake Drexl won six faceoffs adn four ground balls. Swope added three ground balls. Ryan Nowell caused two turnovers. 

CSAC Player of the Year Tony McCraw scored two goals for the Griffins. 

The Griffins outshot the Pacers by a 53-31 margin. Marywood won the ground ball game 36-25. Both teams struggled with the 16 extra-man opportunities awarded: the Griffins went 1 for 8, and the Pacers were successful on just two of eight chances. 

Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first five minutes of the game. Scott Slater ended the scoring freeze with a feed from Deiner at 7:40 in the first stanza. Swope created a chance for Maini to tie the game at 3:27. 

Three straight Griffin goals gave them its largest lead of the game at 5-2 with 9:48 remaining in the first half. Trill ended the 13-minute Marywood scoring drought with a score from Maini with 5:30 left. 

Trill started up the second half with another goal from Swope's 40th assist of the year. Deiner evened the game again on a man-up chance from Trill at 7:08 in the third. Deiner and Trill swapped places on another man-up chance at 3:56 for what proved to be the game-winning goal. Marywood tacked on two goals in a two-minute span (from Slater and Maini) before holding off the Griffins' offense for the final 11 minutes.
