Early Cold Shooting Haunts Pacers in CSAC Loss

Scranton, Pa. –Marywood University came within two possessions after trailing by 19 at halftime in a 65-57 loss to Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pacers remain winless through four games on the season.

Gab Giordano posted a season-high 19 points. She made eight of her 16 shots and contributed four steals on the night.

Erika Bistran reached double figures for the fourth time this season with 12 points and four assists.

Alyssa Olson had a team-high seven rebounds.

Marywood finished by shooting 35 percent from the field. The Pacers were cold in the first half (25.81 percent) but picked up in the second at a 44.83 percent clip.

The Griffins outrebounded the Pacers by a 44-35 margin. Gwynedd Mercy had 26 fast-break points ot the Pacers' two.

Gwynedd Mercy's Bianca Adams finished with 14 points. Susan Bossler had 11 points and seven rebounds.

With the game pegged at five in the early stages, the Griffins broke things open with an 11-point run to take a 16-5 lead on a Sydney Thompson 3-pointer with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Gwynedd Mercy outscored the Pacers 14-2 in the final 5:50 of the first half, holding the Pacers to without a field goal.

Gwynedd Mercy had a 40-21 lead at the break.

Marywood held the Griffins scoreless in the final 3:05 of the third quarter, chipping away at the Griffins' lead on a Bistran layup in the pain with 14 seconds left in the stanza to make it 52-42.

The Pacers' scoring run grew to 10 when they made the first two baskets of the fourth. Aryah Aungst made a layup from a Bistran feed. Bistran hit a 3-pointer with 8:31 to get the Pacers within five points (52-47) with 8:30 remaining.

After Lisa Steakin made it a 54-48 deficit at 7:17, the Griffins put a dagger into the Pacers' comeback hopes with an eight-point run. Thompson kicked it off with 3-pointer in the corner. Larissa Leyes made an old-fashioned three-point play on the ensuing possession. A pair of Olivia Rosemont free throws extended the Griffins' lead to 62-48 with 5:42 left.

Marywood had one last effort in its tank after trailing 63-50. The Pacers held Gwynedd Mercy without a field goal for the final 6:14 of the contest but were unable to capitalize on the charity stripe.
