Marywood Drops Heartbreaker in Strokes

Scranton, Pa. – Visiting Stockton University improved to 7-2 on the year after defeating Marywood in heartbreaking fashion in penalty strokes.  The two teams battled to a 3-3 tie through regulation and overtime, but the Ospreys escaped Scranton with a 4-3 win after taking strokes, 3-2.

Marywood fell to 1-6 with the loss. Five of the Pacers' losses on the year have been by one goal. Alexa Massa got the game-winning goal after making the final stroke for the Ospreys.

With five defensive saves in the contest, Marywood's Tori Jo Kakusian became the Colonial States Athletic Conference's all-time leader in the category.

Marywood opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Lindsey Quinn scored on a ball delivered from Kenzie Drew on the right perimeter.  Quinn chipped the shot in from 10 yards out to collect her first goal of the season and put the Pacers up 1-0 early.

The Ospreys responded by scoring three goals in a row.  First, Victoria Caiazzo (Alexa Massa assist) tied the game at 1-1 in the 12th minute and an unassisted goal from Britney Stein on a scramble in front of the cage put the visitors up 2-1 at the 23:17 mark of the first.

Caiazzo make it 3-1 in favor of Stockton nearly four minutes later when she tapped in a rebound after Kerri Mountz made a save for the Pacers.

Down 3-1 to start the second, Marywood came out hard, and Quinn notched her second goal of the game when she took a Gwyneth Gleason cross from the left side and again chipped the ball into the cage.

Two minutes later, the Pacers were awarded a penalty stroke and Kakusian put it home to knot the game at 3-3.  The goal from Kakusian marks her fourth of the season, a team best thus far.

Neither team could find the back of the net again in regulation nor in the 15 minute overtime period. Marywood had a one-player advantage for the last three minutes of the first overtime and for the entire 15 minutes of the second overtime as a Stockton player drew a red card at the 81:43 mark.

Stockton held a distinct advantage in shots (33-21) and shots on goal (28-18), but Marywood's Kerri Mountz made 18 saves to keep the Pacers in the game. Mountz made two saves on penalty strokes, including one in the final seconds of the second overtime. Marywood had a 19-15 advantage in penalty corners.

It's a quick turnaround for Marywood as the Pacers host King's College in their final non-conference game before league play begins next weekend.  Sunday's action against the Monarchs is set for a 1:00 pm start.
