Bench Sparks Comeback that Falls Short to Cabrini

Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University's six-game winning streak came to a close in a 74-69 loss to Cabrini University on Sunday in Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball action. The Pacers' bench sparked a comeback that saw a 14-point fourth quarter deficit diminish to a two-point game in the final minute.

Gab Giordano cut the score down to 68-66 with 56 seconds remaining when Marissa Fernandez-Tierney set her up with an open layup. Cabrini's Cassidy Gallagher made a pair of free throws with 40 seconds remaining. Giordano had a chance to respond but made just one of her attempts with 27 seconds on the board. The Cavaliers made six of eight free throw attempts in the final 40 seconds to seal the victory.

Giordano finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Aryah Aungst and Erika Bistran finished with 11 points. Catie Nealon added five assists.

Cabrini was aided largely by Lexi Edwards' 31 points. She went 11 of 15 from the floor and made six 3-pointers. Katie Lannon was the only other Cavalier in double figures with 11.

The Cavaliers (15-2, 8-0 CSAC) went on an eight-point run in the third quarter to extend a two-possession game to a 14-point lead in a matter of 80 seconds. After Kate King hit a 3-pointer to give Cabrini its largest lead of the game (54-39), the Marywood responded by outscoring the Cavs 7-2 in the remaining 1:49 of the third quarter. Lisa Steakin made a long-distance 3-pointer to trim the Cavs' lead to 10.

Cabrini still had punches left and again grew its lead to 14 points when Edwards stole the ball and dished it ahead to Nomi Washington for an eventual layup. With 7:18 left, Tara Macciocco subbed in five reserves – Aryah Aungst, Cait Reilly, Sam Bruno, Steakin, Fernandez Tierney — that put pressure on the Cavaliers and jump-started the comeback effort. Another long-range desperation 3-pointer from Steakin started a five-minute span that had Marywood outscore Cabrini by a 20-6 margin.

Edwards had seemed to put the Pacers out of contention with a 3-pointer with 3:54 left that extended the lead back to double digits. Fernandez Tierney badgered the Cavs offense to force them into seven fourth quarter turnovers, and Marywood went on an eight-point streak. Giordano made a steal and went coast-to-coast for a fast break layup that put the Pacers within three at 67-64 with 1:14 left in the contest.

Marywood (9-9, 7-2 CSAC) shot 42.4 percent from the field, compared to the Cavaliers' 44.3 percent. Cabrini slighted Marywood 37-36 in rebounds. Both teams struggled from the free throw line, but Marywood made just 52.9 percent (9 of 17) from the charity stripe.

The Pacers honored Macciocco with a commemorative ball to recognize her 200th career coaching victory set on Thursday.

Marywood heads to La Plume, Pa. to take on Keystone College on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
