Men’s Soccer Holds Off Susquehanna, 3-2, for First Win

Selinsgrove, Pa.- The Marywood University men's soccer team built a two-goal advantage in the second half and held on late Wednesday night, defeating Susquehanna University, 3-2, at Sassafras Field.

The Pacers jumped in front early when Donnie Powell scored in the eighth minute, converting a pass from Kyle Falcon to give Marywood a 1-0 lead.

Susquehanna answered less than 10 minutes later, as Aidan Diglio found the back of the net in the 18th minute to level the match at one.

Marywood regained the lead before halftime. Drew Smith scored in the 24th minute off an assist from Powell.

Marywood continued to apply pressure after halftime, outshooting Susquehanna 13-7 in the second period and 22-14 for the match. The Pacers finally added some breathing room in the 79th minute when Ryan Surowiec finished a pass from Aiden Schmitt to make it a 3-1 contest.

Susquehanna refused to go quietly. Ben Faranda-Diedrich scored in the 87th minute off an assist from Nathan Kryder, cutting the deficit to 3-2 and setting up a tense final few minutes.

The Pacers, however, managed to keep the River Hawks off the scoreboard the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Ryan Schweigart made six saves in goal for Marywood, while Susquehanna goalkeeper Jason Krum recorded five saves. Both squads had four corner kicks in the match.

Marywood (1-1-1) takes its momentum on the road Saturday, Sept. 12, against Ramapo College at 2 p.m.
