Pacers Stalled by Hawks in Second Half

Scranton, PA – Marywood University was unable to curtail a second-half Hartwick College comeback in a 11-9 loss Monday during its women's lacrosse home opener. The Hawks scored the final four goals of the game to overcome a two-goal second half deficit.

Three Pacers contributed four-point efforts. Caitlin Watson tied a career high with three goals and an assist. Sam Bussinelli contributed a goal and three assists. Ashley Valway garnered two goals and two assists.

Defensively, Natalie Burke and Haley Risi caused four turnovers apiece. Kylie Winton won four draw controls. Lauren Smith made nine saves and four ground balls in goal.

Hartwick's Tarala Carleigh made several key saves down the stretch. Carleigh and the Hawks' defense kept Marywood scoreless for the final 15:39.

Lauren Rosenberg posed problems for the Pacers with four goals and an assist. Ashley Werner scored twice and had an assist. Courtney Coons provided a goal and two assists.

Both teams put one on the scoreboard in the first 46 seconds. Risi wasted no time with a goal 23 seconds into the contest. Just 13 seconds later, Rosenberg totaled her first on a free-position shot.

Neither team gained much traction until Marywood scored three straight to close the final six minutes of the first half. Trailing 5-4, Valway evened the score to 5-5 via a Bussinelli pass at the 5:34 mark. Katrina Kelly gave the Pacers a lead when she one-timed another Bussinelli feed. Watson finished off the half with an FPS goal with 28 seconds remaining.

Hartwick outscored the Pacers 6-2 in the second half. After trading goals, Rachelle Woodhouse tacked on her first career goal to amp the Pacers' lead to 9-7. Hartwick's Abby Letourneau and Jessie Matt were successful on free-position shots within a minute of each other tie the contest at nine apiece with 13:13 left. Emma Knapp provided the game-winning goal on a Coons feed at the 10:31 mark. Coons' FPS goal with six minutes remaining gave the Hawks well-needed insurance.

Four of Carleigh's nine saves came in the waning minutes of the game. Burke caused a turnover and fed a pass to Valway that was turned away. Another Burke caused turnover led to yet another save off a Valway shot with 1:43 remaining. The Hawks were unable to clear due to a Bussinelli steal. Carleigh rejected a pair of Watson shots, including one with her feet, to silence the Pacers for the final time.

Hartwick went 5-of-11 on free-position shots. Each team tied with 11 draw controls. Marywood held a slight 29-27 advantage in ground balls, and Hartwick outshot Marywood by a 28-24 margin.

Marywood travels to Alvernia College Saturday before packing its bags for Greensboro College over spring break.
