ATHLETICS MENTOR PROGRAM

Marywood Athletics Mentor Program

Mission:
The Marywood Athletics Mentor Program aims to strengthen the relationship between athletics and academics, by creating a support system for the student-athletes across campus. Through this program, faculty mentors, staff members, student-athletes, and coaches will interact to increase the ties among the University, develop relationships that will enhance Pacer pride, and support the core values and mission of Marywood University.

Guidelines for Athletics Mentors:

Athletics Mentors are a group of faculty or staff members who are interested in the development of the student-athlete, and furthering the integration of student-athletes within the ideals and mission of Marywood University.

The role of each athletics mentor will vary depending on the relationship style of each team, coach, and mentor. Each athletics mentor will have his or her own style of mentoring, but could consider the following guidelines to facilitate interactions with the team and coaching staff:
  • Be the team’s biggest fan!
  • Attend as many home & away games/contests (as possible)
  • Serve as an informal advisor for the team
  • Be a resource for academic questions from coaches and student-athletes
  • Participate in team’s service project
  • Serve as a resource for prospective student-athletes when they visit campus
  • Attend special team functions (team dinner, holiday party, banquet)
  • Attend the Annual Athletics Banquet
Benefits of being a Athletics Mentor:

Athletics mentors get the benefit of feeling a part of a Marywood Athletics team, while being a mentor to a large group of students. Some tangible benefits of being a faculty mentor are:
  • Team gear
  • Recognition at the Annual Athletics Banquet
  • Recognition as Athletics Mentor on athletic website
* Being a Athletics Mentor is a voluntary experience. Athletics mentors are not expected to serve as academic advisors to the teams they serve, rather they are encouraged to merely be a resource for the student-athletes. There is no set way to be an athletics mentor, and each mentor and coach should communicate what will work best for their styles and situations*
