Two Late Goals Spur Pacers' Victory over Ramapo

Field Hockey - 9/11/2016 4:30:00 PM

Box Score Scranton, Pa. – Marywood University scored two goals in the final four minutes to beat Ramapo College 3-1 Sunday in nonconference field hockey. The Pacers tallied both the game-winning and insurance goals in a 1:49 time frame.

Sara Marshall engineered the game-winning play after the Pacers (3-1) knocked on the Roadrunners' road repeatedly in the closing minutes of regulation. Marshall corralled the ball and fired a long cross pass that skated beneath the lunging goalkeeper's pads. Gabbie Bower was left wide open on the far side to hit it into the cage with 3:11 remaining.

Amelia Waibel led the Pacers with two goals. With three goals to her credit this year, Waibel ties her career-high, matching her total from each of her previous three seasons.

Tori Jo Kakusian added an assist for the Pacers. Kerri Mountz made one save in the victory.

Waibel put Marywood ahead in the 14th minute. She stole the ball from a defender, and her shot was sent into the cage by a charging Ramapo defender.

Six minutes later, Ramapo evened the score at one apiece. Nicole Healy went near side from the top of the circle on a penalty corner sent by Melissa Choka.

After Bower's put the Pacers on top, Waibel supplied the team with an insurance goal with 84 seconds remaining. Kakusian rifled a hard pass from 30 yards out. Waibel redirected into the cage just in front of the keeper.

Emily Wisneski made eight saves for the Roadrunners, including several nifty stops on Kakusian penalty corner shots. Ronni Wellema made a defensive save just before Bower's go-ahead goal.

Marywood outshot the Roadrunners by a 16-3 margin. In juxtaposition, penalty corners were at a 7-5 Pacers' advantage.

The Pacers return to their idyllic field Wednesday to host Wilkes University at 4:00 pm.
