Pacers' Streak Ends, Beats Widener to Salvage Tri-Match Split

Marywood matches 2024 win total

Scranton, Pa. — Marywood University volleyball's season-opening win streak came to a halt at seven matches on Saturday. The Pacers split a tri-match with a loss to Penn State Harrisburg and a win over Widener University. 

The Pride defeated the Lions in the neutral site match. All three finished with a win on Saturday. 

Match 1: Penn State Harrisburg 3, Marywood 2

The Lions defeated the Pacers by scores of 25-14, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 15-8. Marywood lost its first match of the season. 

Taylor Hallam and Genevieve Pollock finished with nine kills apiece. 

Ayla Bransford finished with 26 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Catie Woolf had 18 digs.

Emilie Agnoli had a season-high four aces. Andrea Fraga had three aces and nine digs. 

The Lions' Brianna Ondishin Ribon totaled 15 kills. Hannah DeGregory had 14 kills and a .481 attack percentage. 

Match 3: Marywood 3, Widener 0 

Marywood posted a 27-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory over the Pride. It was the first win over Widener in program history. 

Pollock notched 14 kills and a .480 attack percentage. Carolina Samaniego tallied 10 kills and three aces, and Taylor Hallam registered 11 points with nine kills and a .412 hitting mark. 

Ayla Bransford totaled 37 assists and 12 digs for her second double-double of the day. 

Defensively, Catie Woolf and Andrea Fraga added 18 and 17 digs, respectively. 

After giving up the first five points of the match, Marywood used a three-point to even the score at 11-11 on Samaniego's kill. The Pacers trailed 23-21 before a three-point run on Tess Connolly serves. Samaniego started the swing with a kill. 

Widener earned set point (25-24) following a Julia Schwab ace. Marywood broke set point on a Hallam kill. Following an attack error, Pollock gave Marywood a 1-0 lead with a kill to win the set 27-25. 

Marywood heads to Allentown Tuesday to face Cedar Crest College.
