Pacers Top Alvernia 5-4 to Close Out Season

Scranton, PA - Marywood University rallied in singles play after being down 2-1 following doubles action as the host Pacers closed their 2007 season with a 5-4 win over Pennsylvania Athletic Conference foe Alvernia College Thursday evening in Scranton.

 

In a match lasting nearly four hours, the Pacers (7-8, 4-6 PAC) found themselves down early after dropping two doubles matches to start the day.  Jenny McKee and Hannah Dickey topped Alesha Petrash (Mountaintop, PA) and Samantha Miller (Ashley, PA) 8-2 at 1-doubles before Jodi Balch (Matamoras, PA) and Aubrey Klesh (Hazleton, PA) rebounded for Marywood with an 8-5 win at 2-doubles over Alvernia's Janine Horning and Katie McCormack.  At 3-doubles, the Crusaders' (5-8, 4-6 PAC) Samantha Bader and Heather Leader won 8-3 over Marywood's Michaela Herr (Boalsburg, PA) and Mary Rita DeNucci (Havertown, PA).

 

Marywood closed senior day strong as the Pacers rebounded to win four of six singles matches to earn the hard-fought 5-4 win.  Klesh and Herr cruised to wins at four and five singles respectively with Klesh beating Bader (6-2, 6-1) and Herr beating Leader (6-0, 6-2), but from there out each match went deep.

 

With remaining, Alvernia fought back with a Horning win at 3-singles over Miller, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.  Marywood's Petrash answered at 2-singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) win over Dickey and the Pacers held onto a slight 4-3 advantage. 

 

Amy Doot (Hawthorne, PA) clinched the match for Marywood at 6-singles with at 7-5, 6-4 win over McCormack, but Alvernia's Jenny McKee got the final point of the day with a marathon-match win over Null by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4). 

 

After the match, Marywood said farewell to their two graduating seniors, Mary Rita DeNucci and Michaela Herr

 

Marywood will enjoy a week off before competing in the PAC singles and doubles championships at the West End Club in Allentown, PA on October 26 and 27.
