Scranton, PA – The Marywood field hockey team picked up their first conference victory with a 4-0 win over the visiting College of Notre Dame. With the win, the Pacers evened their record at 2-2 and improved to 1-2 in the PAC, while the Gators fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Caity Hadzimichalis (Harmony, NJ/Belvidere) got the Pacers on the board just four minutes into the game off an assist from Emily Wentzel (East Earl, PA/Garden Spot). Wentzel picked up the ball off a penalty corner and found Hadzimichalis, who rifled a shot into the back of the cage. Hadzimichalis would set up Shannon Hubbard (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy) for a goal off another penalty corner to put Marywood up by two with 19:42 into the first half.
With 9:07 left in the first half, the Pacers were awarded a penalty stroke which Wentzel deposited past Gators' goalie Jessica Maier to give Marywood a 3-0 cushion going into halftime. Kate Krempasky (Honesdale, PA/Honesdale) capped the scoring with a goal at the 17:28 mark of the second half, finishing off a well-executed rush by the Pacers. Hubbard and Meghan Ballantine (Cragsmoor, NY/Ellenville) were credited with assists on the play.
Marywood out-shot the Gators 33-3 on the afternoon and also held a 14-5 edge in penalty corners. Stephanie Ziemski made two saves to record the shutout victory, while Maier made nine saves, including one off a penalty stroke, for the College of Notre Dame.
Marywood is off until Thursday afternoon, when they visit Wilkes University in a non-conference match-up.
