Wilkes-Barre, PA – Marywood University's volleyball team opened the 2007 season in strong fashion, defeating Wilkes University and Mt. St. Mary College by identical 3-1 scores Friday evening at the King's College Tournament in Wilkes-Barre.
Marywood opened the tournament by defeating Wilkes in four games (31-29, 30-26, 23-30, 31-29). Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA/Shenandoah Valley) registered 17 kills in the match, while Taryn Borden (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) added 11. Katie Coyne (Stony Point, NY/Albertus Magnus) had 38 assists in the match to lead the Marywood attack.
In the second match, Marywood again won 3-1 over Mt. St. Mary College of Newburgh, NY. Natasha Freethy's (Honesdale, PA/Western Wayne) 10-kill effort led the Pacers (2-0), while Coyne added 19 assists as Marywood won 30-22, 33-31, 31-33, 30-24.
Marywood returns to the King's Tournament tomorrow and will face off against host King's College and Misericordia University.
