Hackettstown, NJ - Earlier this evening, the Centenary men's basketball team took on PAC opponent Marywood in a double header with the Lady Cyclones. After a tough battle the men came out on top with Will Atkinson heading the charge with 25 points as Centenary edged Marywood, 65-64.
The Cyclones and Pacers began the first half pretty evenly with both teams taking the lead early on. Almost ten minutes in Marywood edged out in front by seven off a three pointer by Karl Anderson (Northampton, PA) but Centenary pulled right back to within three just a few minutes later. With five left on the clock the Cyclones tied the score up at 26 but their run was short lasting as the Pacers held the advantage for the remainder of the half. Despite Atkinson's 13 point first period, the Cyclones headed into the locker room down by one, 36-35.
The second half began much like the start of the game with both teams putting points on the board and neither team getting ahead by more than six, although the Pacers were in charge more often than Centenary. With ten minutes left the Cyclones decreased their deficit to one and a jumper by Corey Kearney put the Cyclones back in front. The teams traded baskets and the lead for the next few minutes with Centenary getting a small advantage and increasing their lead to five, but the Pacers retaliated keeping the game close. At the two minute mark the Cyclones clung to a one point lead but were forced to play defense for the almost the final minute of play. Marywood, however, could not convert on several set plays.
Atkinson hit five shots from behind the arc and totaled 25 points to lead the Cyclone's scoring. Teammate Andrew Baker tallied ten points nine rebounds and seven blocks while freshmen KearneyKearney scoring ten. and Robert Urie increased the Cyclones points with Urie netting 13 and
For the Pacers, Joshua Pena (New York City, NY) was out in front in scoring with 17 points with Matthew Medici (Princeton, NJ) adding 12.
Marywood now stands at 5-6 overall and 0-4 in PAC play. The Pacers will look to end their two-game skid and return to the .500 mark when they return to action Wednesday evening with a non-conference tilt against Penn College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Insalaco Arena.
