Scranton, PA – Visiting Alvernia College enjoyed a strong shooting night while the Pacers struggled to find the net as the Crusaders cruised to a 93-50 victory over Marywood in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference match-up Thursday evening. With the win, the second-place Crusaders improve to 11-7 overall and 8-1 in the PAC while Marywood falls to 6-11 and 0-9 in conference play.
Marywood would jump out to a 5-2 lead in the game's first minute on baskets by Joshua Pena (New York City, NY) and Jerome Gosney (Binghamton, NY), but it was all Crusaders after that. The visitors used a pair of 18-5 runs to build a 25-point halftime lead. The first run gave Alvernia a 27-13 lead with 8:21 to play in the half, while the Crusaders enjoyed an 18-5 run over the final 4:22 over the period to make the score 48-23 at halftime.
Charlie Washington led all scorers with 13 points in the first half while Tyrone Bradley added 11 for Alvernia, who shot 58 percent from the floor in the half including 7 of 14 from three-point range.
Marywood was led by Karl Anderson's (Northampton, PA) 8 points, while Matthew Medici (Princeton Junction, NJ) added five points and six rebounds in the opening stanza. The Pacers shot just 23 percent in the first half and were 3 of 12 on three-point attempts.
The Pacers could draw no closer in the second half as Alvernia continued to knock down shots from both in close and at range, building a 52-point lead at 85-33 with 10:07 to play. Marywood would outscore Alvernia 14-8 the rest of the way to account for the 93-50 final score.
Charlie Hughes led all scorers with 24 points while Terrence Shawell added 20 points for Alvernia. Matt King netted 18 points while Nick Rivera came of the bench to contribute a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Crusaders.
Medici led Marywood with nine points and six rebounds while Anderson finished with eight points. Chadli Charlot (Lake Worth, FL) came off the bench to grab a team-high 10 rebounds while also blocking three shots.
The Pacers will visit Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday looking to break a five-game losing streak and notch their first conference win. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
