BOX SCORE

Scranton, PA – Gwynedd-Mercy College scored off a restart in the 35th minute and made it stand as the Griffins notched a 1-0 win over Marywood University in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon. The Griffins improved to their conference record to 2-1 on the year and 3-9-1 while the Pacers dropped to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the CSAC.

Gwynedd Mercy got the game's only goal off a corner kick at the 34:20 mark of the opening half. Bill Gormley served the set piece into the box where Mike Sweeney settled the ball for Tim Mumford, who blasted a shot home from close range.

The Pacers pushed forward looking for an equalizer in the second half, out-shooting the Griffins by an eight to five margin, but would come up empty. Goal-bound headers by Pete Szerling (Radom, Poland) and Alex Dawson (Endicott, NY) were saved by Gwynedd-Mercy goalkeeper Mike Leonard who finished the afternoon with five saves.

Jared El-Gayeh (Baldwin, NY) made five saves for the Pacers, including two spectacular stops in the first half to keep the game within reach for Marywood.

Marywood, who lost their second straight conference game by shutout, held a 12-10 advantage in shots while the Griffins had a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Pacers are back in action again tomorrow as they host Rowan University in a non-conference game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
