Scranton, PA - Junior captain Lisa Hanselman took a long pass from Lisa Gavin just past the midfield line midway through the opening period and buried a shot in the back of the net and Marywood held on to defeat Gwynedd-Mercy College 1-0 in a key Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) women's soccer match Saturday afternoon in Scranton. With the win, the Pacers won their seventh consecutive game, improved to 9-4-1 (6-0 CSAC) and grabbed sole possession of first place atop CSAC standings. The loss drops the Griffins to 5-8 and 4-1 CSAC.

With just under 28:30 left in the opening period and after both teams had several scoring chances, Marywood broke a 0-0 deadlock when Gavin (Woodbury Heights, NJ) sent a thru-ball over the top of the Griffin defense and Hanselman (Manheim, PA) out-ran several defenders before taking one touch just outside the 18 and burying a shot past GMC goalkeeper Kristie Pollock.

The Pacers held that lead going into the break, and despite several more dangerous chances by both teams, neither could find the back of the net in the second half as Marywood held on for the win. Meghan Coyle (Endicott, NY) made one save on six Gwynedd-Mercy shots to preserve her sixth shut-out of the year while Pollock (Kennett Square, PA) made three stops for the Griffins.

Marywood faces a tough Centenary College team next Wednesday in Hackettstown, New Jersey in another key CSAC battle at 4:00 pm.
