Marywood Claims 83-68 Win Over Delaware Valley

Scranton, PA – Marywood University's women's basketball team snapped a three-game winless streak with an 83-68 win over Delaware Valley College in a non-conference match-up on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Pacers will take a 4-3 record into 2009 while the Aggies see their record slide to 4-4.

The two teams swapped the lead three times over the first five minutes of the game, with the host Pacers claiming a 10-8 lead on a Stephanie Fusaro (Bala Cynwyd, PA) lay-up with 15:13 to play in the first half.

After a Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) three-pointer and an Amanda Lass (Brackney, PA) lay-up, the Aggies rallied to tie the score at 15-15 when Erin Boyer drained a three-pointer of her own with 11:45 showing on the clock.

Following Boyer's trey, Marywood responded with a 10-2 run over the next 5:30 to build a 25-17 advantage after Fusaro made one of two free throws. The Pacers would lead by as many as 10 in the opening half before the visitors cut Marywood's lead to 41-33 as the teams headed to the halftime break.

The visiting Aggies trimmed the Pacers lead to 43-39 at the 17:15 mark of the second half on Jackie Shunkwiler field goal, but Marywood responded with a run that saw them reclaim a nine-point advantage when Thorsen drained a pair of free throws with 14:26 to play.

Delaware Valley countered with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes to claim a 57-52 lead with 10:17 left in the game. The Pacers rebounded and would take 58-57 lead with 8:19 to play when Alysa Mayo (Media, PA) converted a lay-up.

Kim Vennera put the Aggies back in front at the 6:58 mark with a lay-up of her own to give the visitors a 61-60 lead, but a Lass free throw followed by a lay-up from Green gave Marywood a lead that they would not relinquish as the Pacers outscored the Aggies 19-7 over the final 6:33 of the game.

Marywood was led by Lass's 21 point, 13 rebound effort. The sophomore forward also added five assists to her double-double. Green added a double-double of her own with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Thorsen netted 18 points while Marilee Sobrinksi (Ocean City, NJ) was the fourth Pacer to hit double-digits after finishing with 10 points.

Boyer came off the bench to score a game-high 24 points for Delaware Valley, While Kim Vennera finished the afternoon with 17 points, seven rebounds, and a game-high six assists.

Marywood will play next on Saturday, January 3rd, hosting Nyack College in a non-conference game scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in Scranton.
