Scranton, PA – Marywood University opened their 2008 softball season with a sweep of Baptist Bible College Friday evening in Scranton.  The Pacers knocked off the Defenders 3-2 in the opener before taking control early in a 5-0 win in the nightcap.  Marywood starts the year at 2-0 while Baptist Bible goes 0-2.

Despite striking out 17 of the 35 batters she faced, Baptist Bible's Liz Tomasetti took the loss in the opener after Marywood's Colleen Regan (Endwell, NY) ripped a 2-out double to left center to score Kim Flanagan (Monroe, NY) in the top of the seventh.  Nikki Belles (Rome, PA) struck out seven in the complete-game win for Marywood.  The Pacers were led by Erika Cook, who went 2-3 with two doubles.  Regan and Miranda Sorber (Hunlock Creek, PA) each picked up RBIs for Marywood.  Tomasetti went 1-3 with an RBI at the plate to lead the Defenders offensively as well.  Marlie Kneifel went 1-3 and hit a game-tying home run for BBC in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-2.

In the nightcap, Marywood scored three in the first and two in the second for a five run cushion that would reflect the final score.  Cook (Wyalusing, PA) was 1-3 with two runs scored while Megan Haikes (Scranton, PA) went 1-4 with two RBI.  Sophomore Lauren Monaco (Carle Place, NY) went five solid innings on the mound in her collegiate debut for the Pacers, striking out four while allowing just three hits.  Freshman Mallory Gable (Hughestown, PA) came on to pitch the final two innings of relief where she struck out four without allowing a hit.

Marywood freshman Brittany Davis (Scranton, PA), who finished the day 2-7 with a double, had an excellent day at the plate despite the final numbers.  With the game being played indoors at Riverfront Sports Complex, Davis had five deep shots hit the ceiling, resulting in foul balls that could have otherwise gone for home-runs.

Tomasetti pitched another solid performance for BBC in the nightcap, allowing just six hits and striking out seven to give her 24 k's on the day.  Heather Stamper was 1-3 with a triple for the Defenders in the nightcap.

Marywood returns to action next week in Florida.  The Pacers will open their 2008 spring break trip in Ft. Pierce, FL with a single game against Northwestern College of Minnesota on March 13th.  In all, the Pacers will play 10 games in the South.
