Griffins Blast 18 Hits, Topple Marywood 15-3

Scranton, PA - Visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College pounded out 18 hits en route to a 15-3 win over host Marywood University in PAC baseball action Friday afternoon in Scranton.  The loss drops the Pacers to 10-9 overall and 4-4 in conference play while the Grifins improve to 10-15, 6-4 PAC.

After falling behind 2-0 after one inning, GMC rallied and plated 10 runs in the next four innings to take a commanding 10-3 lead after five innings of play.  Marywood starter Mark Granquist (Honesdale, PA) fell to 2-4 on the year after allowing seven earned runs over those five innings.  Granquist did manage to strike out six on the afternoon, but was replaced by Jeff Cleary (Parsippany, NJ) in the sixth.  Cleary pitched three innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out two. 

The Griffins, meanwhile, got a solid performance from starter Andrew Ball, who struck out four over eight innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the year.  James Myarick pitched a hitless ninth in relief.  The Griffins were led by Ryan Nally, who went 2-3 with five RBI on the day.  Tim McMenamin went 2-5 with two doubles and two RBI, while Mark Mattes went 2-4 with a double, RBI and three runs scored.  Scott Carroll completed the Griffins' excellent day at the plate with a 2-4, one RBI effort.  Carroll belted a triple and scored two runs as well.

For Marywood, Joe Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) was the lone Pacer with more than one hit.  The freshman second baseman went 2-3 with two runs scored.  Ryan Cusomato (Sparta, NJ), Dan D'Antonio (New Milford, CT) and Chris Shewack (Mountaintop, PA) picked up Marywood's RBIs on the day.  Joseph Valvano (Katanah, NY) pitched the ninth for Marywood and allowed one run on three hits while striking out two. 

The two teams will do battle again on Saturday with a doubleheader slated for a 12:00 pm start in Gwynedd Valley.
