Gwynedd Valley, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy College used extra innings in both games to sweep a PAC doubleheader over Marywood. The Griffins took game one in nine innings, 6-5, and the nightcap, 5-4, in eight. The pair of wins extends Gwynedd's win-streak to four games and puts them at 12-15 (8-4 PAC) while the Pacers slip to 10-11 (4-6 PAC).
GMC's Kyle Reynolds picked up wins in both games in relief but the second win did not come as easy. In the second game, Scott Carroll scored from third with two outs in the eighth off an error at first for a 5-4 victory. The Pacers sent it to extra innings as they erased a 4-2 deficit in the seventh, as Bill Hall (Lake Ariel, PA) hit a two-run single off Reynolds.
Gwynedd rallied as Carroll led off the last inning with a walk, then was moved over to second on a sacrifice. After an intentional walk and later a wild pitch, the Griffins had runners at second and third. The Pacers' first baseman Chris Shewack (Mountaintop, PA) couldn't handle the throw on a grounder to third from batter Steve Sable, allowing Carroll to score the winning run.
Hall finished the nighcap 2-3 with two RBI, while Joe Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) was 3-4 with a RBI. Korey Evans took the loss on the mound after allowing four earned runs over 7.2 innings of work. Evans (Goshen, NY) struck out three and allowed nine hits.
Gwynedd's Mike Albert's RBI single capped a late-inning rally in game one as GM posted a 6-5 win. After Marywood plated two in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead on a Bill Hall RBI single, the Griffins rallied with two outs as Mattes scored on an error in the outfield to knot the game.
DiEnno led off the ninth, getting to first on a hit by pitch. Pinch runner Dave Deodato was then sacrificed to second where Albert ended it with a single.
Ryan Cusomato (Sparta, NJ) and Mike Castellano (Brooklyn, NY) were both 1-3 for the Pacers in the opener. Cusomato added two RBI while Matt Newcomb (Honesdale, PA) was 1-4 with a double and an RBI. Jeff Cleary (Parsippany, NJ) took the loss on the mound for the Pacers after coming on in relief of his brother, Greg. Greg went 8 innings and allowed five runs, but none earned, while striking out two. Jeff allowed one run on one hit in 0.1 inning of work.
Marywood returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader at King's College on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm at Betzler Fields in Wilkes-Barre Township.
