Scranton, PA – Alfred scored seven straight second-half goals to break open a close game and picked up a 15-6 win over Marywood in non-conference action Saturday afternoon. With the win, Saxons improved their record to 2-9 while the Pacers, who had their two-game winning streak snapped, slipped to 3-10.
Alfred struck first when Michelle Adams converted a free-position shot 3:20 into the game, but Marywood answered just over five minutes later when Laura Gierman (Columbus, NJ), who was recognized prior to the game as the Pacers' lone senior, scored unassisted.
The Saxons would take a 3-1 lead when Abbey Schaffnit and Adams tallied goals a minute apart, but Marywood would once again respond with two of their own as Gierman and Alanna Waldron (Liverpool, NY) both found the back of the net to level the score at 3-3 with 17:33 to play in the opening half.
The visitors would score the next four goals though to take a 7-3 halftime lead. Abbey Schaffnit scored three times and Emily Tobin once in the final 15 minutes of the opening stanza.
Waldron got the Pacers to within three by scoring on a free-position shot just 56 second half, but the Saxons would score the next seven goals to build a commanding 14-4 led with 7:04 to play.
Genevieve Vidas (Old Bridge, NJ) scored two free-position goals separated by 1:05 for the Pacers late in the second half, but Kate Simmonds capped the scoring with 1:50 to play. Schaffnit, who finished the game with five goals and two assists, set up Simmonds goal.
Alfred held a slim 30-29 advantage in shots on the afternoon while each team picked up 27 groundballs.
Kate Baughman earned the win by turning aside 14 Marywood shots while Katie Sullivan (Merrick, NY) made 10 saves in a losing effort for the Pacers.
Marywood will close out the conference portion of their schedule on Tuesday when they host Cabrini College in a PAC contest scheduled to face-off at 4:00 p.m.
