Scranton, PA – The University of Scranton scored 25 runs on 31 hits as the visiting Royals swept a non-conference doubleheader from cross-town rivals Marywood University Wednesday afternoon in Scranton. The pair of wins puts Scranton at 20-12 on the year while Marywood slips to 12-19.
The Royals belted 21 hits and 10 doubles in route to an 18-2 win in the opener. Scranton took a 7-0 lead after just two innings on the strength four doubles, added two in the fourth on two more doubles and would then score nine more in the sixth and seventh on four doubles.
Charles Comprelli (Harrison, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was 4-6 with three RBI and two runs scored for the Royals in game one. Andrew Outhouse (Croton Falls, NY/North Salem) was 2-4 with four RBI, while Justin Champagne (Mt. Bethel, PA/Bangor Area) was 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. In all, Scranton had 17 runs on the day. Chris Bligh (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was 3-3 with a triple, two RBI and four runs scored.
Tim Reiser (Marlborough, CT/RHAM) improved to 3-0 on the mound for Scranton after striking out seven over six innings of work. Reiser allowed just one earned run on four hits. Mike Yasson pitched on inning of scoreless relief.
Alex Magid (South Salem, NY) took the loss for the Pacers, falling to 1-2 on the year. The freshman hurler allowed 13 earned runs on 17 hits. Joseph Valvano (Katanah, NY) pitched the final 1.2 innings for Marywood, allowing four runs on four hits.
Joe Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) was 1-3 with an RBI for Marywood while Michael Paolucci (Clarks Summit, PA) was 1-2 with a triple and a RBI.
In the nightcap, the Royals got a strong middle-relief effort from Todd McGee (Chadds Ford, PA/Garnet Valley) and Karl Weiss (Clifton, NJ/Don Bosco Prep) shut the door on the Pacers in the bottom of the seventh as the Royals held on for a 7-5 win. Mike Sidlowski (New York, NY/Xavier) took command early as the visitors built a 6-2 lead, but struggled in the seventh as Marywood rallied with three runs to make it 6-5.
McGee then came in and pitched 1.1 innings of one-hit ball to prevent any further damage, and Weiss picked up his third save by pitching a hitless seventh. For the Royals, Chris Bligh (Jersey City, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) was 1-4 with two RBI, while Kevin Johnson was 2-2 with two runs scored.
Stefano Curto (Coopersburg, PA) went four innings on the mound for the Pacers and allowing four earned runs and striking out one. Korey Evans (Goshen, NY) took the loss and fell to 1-4 after allowing two runs on two hits over 1.2 innings.
Bill Hall (Lake Ariel, PA) was 2-3 with a double and two RBI to lead the Pacers. Marywood returns to action Friday when the Pacers host Eastern University to begin a key three-game series with the Eagles. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
