Box Score

Scranton, PA - Three-days removed from a 20-run, 18-hit attack against Wilkes, Marywood managed just five hits in a 9-2 loss to Centenary College Sunday afternoon in PAC baseball action at Connell Park in Scranton.  Marywood batters struck out 12 times in the contest as the Pacers slipped to 8-7 (3-2 PAC).  Centenary, who got a gem from starting pitcher Andrew Koncen, improved to 7-12 (2-5 PAC).

Koncen, who got 11 of the 12 K's on the day and his first win of the season for the Cyclones, did not allow a hit until Marywood's Mike Castellano (Brooklyn, NY) singled in the fifth inning.  Michael McGuckin opened the scoring for Centenary in the top of the second with a two-run double to left.  McGuckin would finish the day 2-5 at the plate.  The Cyclones would add three more in the top of the third to go up 5-0 on a single, sacrifice fly and a Mark DeMaio RBI doubl
e and go up 8-0 in the top of the sixth when DeMaio smacked a two-run single to center.

Marywood got their lone runs of the day in the bottom half of the sixth when Justin Linko (Scranton, PA) picked up a two-run double to right on a strange play.  With runners on first and second, Linko's fly to left landed short of the Cyclone left-fielder.  With runners advancing, the ball was ruled dead when it went down the jersey of the left-fielder, therefore allowing Linko to advance to second for a double and the second Marywood run to score.

That would be all the Marywood offense could manage though, as Koncen settled back down and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth.  Chris Mattson came on in relief and struck out one in a scoreless ninth.

Marywood's Mark Granquist (Honesdale, PA) fell to 2-3 after allowing six earned runs on twelve hits over six innings of work.  Granquist struck out seven Cyclones on the day.  Alex Magid (South Salem, NY) pitched the final three innings for the Pacers, allowing one run on two hits.

Marywood returns to action Tuesday when they return to Connell Park, this time as the away team, as the Pacers battle the University of Scranton at 4:00 pm.
