Wilkes-Barre, PA – Marywood University opened the 2008 volleyball campaign with a split on the first night of action at the King's College Tournament Friday in Wilkes-Barre. The Pacers fell to Wilkes 3-1 before rebounding to defeat Mt. St. Mary College in four games.
In the opener, Wilkes snatched the first game 25-20 before the Pacers evened the score with a 25-23 win in the second game. However, the Colonels won the next two games 25-22 and 25-16, respectively, to take the season-opener.
Emily Fillman (Clarion, PA) led the Pacers attack with 11 kills. Taryn Borden (Bridgewater, NJ) added five aces while Arielle Cassidy (Garwood, NJ) contributed nine digs.
In the nightcap, Marywood won the first two games, 25-21 and 25-16, before Mt. St. Mary took the third 25-17. The Pacers clinched their first victory of the season with a 25-21 victory in the fourth game.
Fillman had 10 kills for Marywood, while Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) added nine aces, eight kills, and eight digs. Borden had eights to help lead the Pacers to the win.
Marywood will take a 1-1 record into the second day of the tournament. The Pacers will take on hosts King's College at 12:00 a.m. before meeting Misericordia University at 2:00 p.m.
