Scranton, PA – Carly Savastano's third goal of the year was not enough as visiting Marywood University fell to host University of Scranton 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action Thursday afternoon.  First-year forward Alexandria Marandino and senior forward Meg Mathewson scored a goal apiece for the Royals, who improved to 2-1 on the year.

The Royals also got a big lift from sophomore reserve goalie Deirdre Rocklein, who played the entire
second-half and made four saves to preserve the victory.  Marandino made the most of her opportunity in the first-half.  After immediately entering the lineup, she tapped in her second shot attempt on a scramble in front of the Marywood cage for her second goal of the season to give the Royals a 1-0.

The Pacers answered immediately, as senior forward Savastano (Honesdale, PA) blasted in a shot from 15 yards out off of a pass from outside the scoring circle by junior midfielder Emily Wentzel (East Earl, PA) at the 28:32 mark.

Early in the second half, Royal senior forward Charleigh LaFronz-Emberger -fought a Pacer defender and send a ball inside the circle that Mathewson tracked down and tapped in from eight yards out for her third goal of the year.

Marywood's best opportunity to tie the score came in the 62nd-minute on a penalty corner.  Junior midfielder Kari Eiklor (Apalachin, NY) drilled a shot from 15 yards away that was deflected by Rocklein.  On the ensuing scramble for the ball, Pacer sophomore back Maggie Brittain (Clarks Summit, PA) had her shot attempt turned away by Rocklein.

First-year goalie Jennifer Miller (Hawley, PA) finished with a game-high nine saves for Marywood, now 1-1.  The Pacers return to action Saturday when they play host to Wilkes University at 1:00 pm.
