Cabrini Slips Past Pacers in CSAC Action

Scranton, PA – Marywood University erased a 19-point first-half deficit to Cabrini College, but the visiting Cavaliers were able to sneak out of Scranton with a 75-69 win in Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Thursday evening. With the win, Cabrini remains unbeaten in four conference games and improve to 8-3 on the season while the Pacers fall to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the CSAC.

Cabrini built a 12-2 lead over the first three minutes of the contest. Marywood cut the Cavaliers lead in half on consecutive field goals by Maggie Farrell (Telford, PA) and Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA), but the visitors would stretch their to 38-19 with 4:22 remaining after Brittany McLeod completed a three-point play.

The Pacers closed the half with a 13-2 run to narrow their deficit to 40-32 as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms.

The Cavaliers, who shot 52 percent from the floor in the opening stanza and converted 10 of 11 free throws, were led by Kayleen Smith's 11 points. Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) had eight points in the period to lead Marywood, who shot 36 percent from the field.

Marywood continued to chip away the Cabrini's lead in the beginning of the second half, cutting the deficit to 46-44 on Thorsen's three-pointer with 15:28 remaining. The hosts would tie the score with 11:16 to play after Caitlyn Ely (Montrose, PA) converted a pair of free throws to knot the score at 49-49.

Cabrini responded with eight unanswered points before the Pacers went on a 10-3 run of their own to bring the score to 60-59 on Green's lay-up with 5:01 to play. The Cavaliers countered with an 8-2 run capped off by Deana DiAmico's three-pointer with 2:36 to play to give the visitors a 68-61 lead.

Marywood was able to draw within two at 71-69 with 35 seconds to play on Mariah Schaeffer's (Bainbridge, NY) lay-up, but the Cavaliers went a perfect 4 of 4 from the free throw line in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

Smith led the Cavaliers with 20 points while McLeod ended the night with a double-double after finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Brady connected for twelve points while DiAmico was the fourth Cavalier to hit for double-digits with 10 points.

Thorsen finished with a game-high 22 points for the Pacers. Schaeffer ended the game with 15 points while Amanda Lass (Brackney, PA) scored 10 points and pulled down a team-best six rebounds for Marywood, who finished the game shooting 35 percent from the floor.

The Pacers return to action on Monday when they travel to take on Cedar Crest College in a CSAC match-up. Tip-off between the Pacers and Falcons is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
