Scranton, PA – Marywood University's men's soccer team battled defending conference champion Cabrini College to a 0-0 tie in Colonial States Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening. The Pacers record now sits at 6-6-2 on the season while the Cavaliers record moves to 11-3-2. The two squads sit tied for second place in the CSAC with identical 4-1-1 conference marks.
In a game featuring the reigning CSAC Player of the Week in Cabrini goalkeeper Bryan Johnson and Marywood net-minder Jared El Gayeh, who was named to the CSAC Player of the Week Honor Roll a week ago, it seemed fitting that 110 minutes would pass without a goal being scored despite multiple dangerous chances at both ends of the field.
A shot by Cabrini's Eric Collins in the 27th minute of play appeared to be headed into the upper part of the net but El Gayeh (Baldwin, NY) dove to tip the ball over the bar to keep the game scoreless.
Johnson came up big in the second half for the Cavaliers, denying a close range shot from Marywood forward Joshua Hicks (Spring Brook, PA) in the 66th minute and saving a header from Brandon Ritter (Wantage, NJ) in the 84th minute.
El Gayeh helped send the Pacers to overtime for the sixth time on the season by making a diving stop on a Brian Raffle shot with just 1:29 left in regulation.
The Pacers earned a corner kick early in the first period of extra time, but Cabrini intercepted a cross and quickly countered, springing forward King Saah on a breakaway. El Gayeh came off his line to stone Saah and prevent the visitors from getting the game-winner.
Marywood nearly came away with a win late in the first overtime, but Joe Gulli (Forked Rivers, NJ) was unable to find the net after a scramble in front of Cabrini's net.
The game would end scoreless despite a flurry of dangerous restarts in the closing moments by the Cavaliers.
Cabrini held a 19-11 advantage in shots for the game and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
El Gayeh finished the evening with seven saves to notch his fourth, and team's fifth, shutout of the season. The sophomore has not been scored upon in his last 359:49 between the Pacers' pipes. Johnson turned aside four Pacer shots for the Cavaliers.
Marywood returns to action on Saturday when they host Rosemont College in a CSAC game scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m. in Scranton.
