Gwynedd Valley, PA - William Gordon scored with 4:40 remaining in the second overtime period to lift Marywood University's men's soccer team to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Gwynedd-Mercy College in the Pacers' Colonial States Athletic Conference opener on Saturday afternoon. Marywood picked up their second-straight win to improve to 3-5-1 (1-0 CSAC) while the Griffins see their record fall to 4-7 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Marywood opened the scoring at the 11 minutes into Saturday's game when Brett Megee (Easton, PA) headed home a long throw-in from Sean O'Day (Edwardsville, PA) for his second goal of the season.
The Pacers held a 1-0 halftime lead, but Gwynedd-Mercy was awarded a penalty kick just 2:08 into the second half. Tom Petroski stepped up to the line and blast a shot to the left side of the net that Marywood goalkeeper Jared El Gayeh was able to get a hand on, but unable to keep out of the net as the Griffins knotted the game at 1-1.
With neither team able to break the deadlock, the Pacers headed to overtime for the fourth time of the season and got a break in final minute of the first period of extra time when the Griffins had their second player of the game sent off.
Holding a two-man advantage, the Marywood was able to dictate play in the second overtime period and would earn the win in the 105th minute when Gordon (Harrisburg, PA), was able to poke a loose ball across the goal-line after a scramble in front of the Griffin's net.
Gwynedd-Mercy held a 22-17 edge in shots for the game and had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.
El Gayeh (Baldwin, NY) finished with eight saves to earn to the win while Griffins' netminder Mike Leanord turned aside 11 Pacer shots.
Marywood returns to action on Wednesday evening when they Centenary College in a CSAC match-up scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Scranton.
