Men's Basketball Rolls to Non-Conference Win, Open CSAC Play Monday

Box Score

Scranton, PA - Marywood University broke open a tight game with a strong second half performance and got a double-double from freshman D.J. Strayhorn as the Pacers cruised to a 98-69 win over visiting Penn State Scranton Tuesday evening at Marywood's Insalaco Arena.  The win moves the Pacers to 3-1 before they enter conference play Monday while the Lions fall to 1-1.

Despite a game-high 22 points from Penn State's Matt Zera and a 20-point effort from the Lions' Jason Alers, Marywood used a strong second half defensive effort and shot 52.8% from the floor to secure the 29-point win.  Zera led all scorers, but the freshman guard from Pittston Area was limited 2-of-8 shooting in the second half after an 18-point, 6-of-9 effort in the first half.  Marywood got a double-double from Strayhorn (Henryville, PA), who had a team-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor and dished out a game-high 10 assists.  Matt Lepri (Tannersville, PA) came up one rebound shy of a double-double himself after a 12-point, 9 board night.

With numerous lead changes in the first half, Marywood went into the break with a slim 46-41 lead.  The Pacers would open the second half on an 11-2 run to break open the close game and would hit over 50% of their shots in each half.  The Pacers also hit 42% from behind the arc after dropping eight three pointers in 19 attempts.  The Lions opened the game hot, connecting on 54% of their shots in the first half, including a 6-of-9 effort from long range, but the Pacers defense forced 22 turnovers on the night and limited the visitors to just 31% shooting in the second half.

Marywood also got 16 points from Jacques Robinson (Athens, GA).  Robinson hit four of seven three-point attempts on the night.  Tyler Reinhard (Highlands, NJ) added 10 points.  Matthew Macart added 10 points for the visitors in the loss.

The Pacers open CSAC play next Monday when they host Immaculata University at 8:00 pm.
