Scranton, PA – Marywood University improved to 3-0 on the season with a 68-63 win over Wilkes University in non-conference women's basketball action on Tuesday evening in Scranton. The Pacers used an 11-4 run over the first five minutes of the second half to break open a 33-33 halftime tie while dropping the Colonels to 1-3 on the young season.
Wilkes built a 10-4 lead 4:22 into the game on a Lindsey Gosse lay-up, but Marywood would battle back to claim a 13-12 lead on an Amanda Lass (Brackney, PA) lay-up with 11:35 to play in the opening half. The two teams would swap the lead six more times over the remainder of the opening 20 minutes of play. Whitney Connolly put the visitors ahead 33-31 on a jumper with 55 seconds left in the half before Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) sent the teams to their locker rooms knotted at 33 by converting a lay-up with 34 ticks on the clock.
The Colonels' Sam Lynam led all scorers in the first half with 13 points while Lass had eight points and eight rebounds to lead Marywood.
The host Pacers opened the second half with an 11-4 run capped off by a Stephanie Fusaro (Bala Cynwyd, PA) lay-up with 15:18 to play to give Marywood a 46-37 advantage. The Colonels cut their deficit to five on an Erin Schneider three-pointer with 14:12 remaining, but the Pacers would hold on the edge over the next ten minutes, extending their advantage to as many as 10 points.
Wilkes would not go down without a fight though, cutting Marywood's lead to three points with 23 seconds to play after Schneider hit the front end of a pair of free throws. Fusaro would ice the game with 11 second left by converting a pair of free throws to give the Pacers the 68-63 win.
Marywood was led by Mariah Schaeffer's (Bainbridge, NY) 13 points while Fusaro finished the game with a double-double on 12 points and 10 rebounds. Green had 11 points and fell a rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
Wilkes was led by Gosse, who recorded game-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lynam added 15 points for the Colonels while Schneider netted 12 in a losing effort.
Marywood opens conference play next Monday when they host Immaculata University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Scranton.
