Marywood’s Repeat Bid Fails in Overtime

Box Score

Immaculata, PA – Cabrini College's Annmarie Kolla scored on a breakaway 5:06 into the first overtime period and the second seed Cavaliers upset top-seed Marywood University for the CSAC Women's Soccer Championship Saturday afternoon at Immaculata's Draper Walsh Stadium. Cabrini improved to 14-5-1 and gained the CSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament while Marywood concludes their record setting campaign at 14-3-1.

Siobhan Blancaflor (Haddam, CT) was denied a point blank chance by Cabrini goalkeeper Maddy Edwards just over six and a half minutes into the game after taking a nice feed from Lisa Hansleman (Manheim, PA) inside the box. With 19 minutes to play in the opening half, defender Shannon Hresko (Gibbstown, NJ) made a great defensive play, sliding across the six yard line to deny a Cabrini attacker a golden opportunity on goal.

Edwards came off her line to take the ball off the foot of Marywood forward Caitlin Light (Annville, PA) with just over five minutes to play in the opening half and just moments later the Cavaliers nearly took the lead when Annmarie Kolla missed just wide of the far post off a great cross from Dana Nardello. Nardello fired a 20 yard shot just wide with three minutes left on the clock Erin Doyle (New Hampton, NY) headed a cross just over the bar at the other end and the two teams went into halftime in a scoreless 0-0 deadlock.

Cabrini held an 8-6 advantage in shots for the period with Marywood goalkeeper Meghan Coyle (Endicott, NY) making fours saves and Edwards turning aside three Pacer shots.

In the second half, Hanselman volleyed a Hresko corner kick just over the crossbar five minutes into the second half, but the Pacers leading scorer and CSAC Player of the Year would go down with an injury midway through the period. Cabrini's Kara Hinkelmon, dangerous through the second 45 minutes of play, fired a shot from 18-yards out that Coyle made a diving save on and the junior goalkeeper came off her lines moments later to cut off a dangerous thru-ball.

Olivia Habicht (Woodcliff Lake, NJ) took a hard-angled shot with a little over four minutes to play, but again Edwards was up to the test. Despite the two teams combining for 24 shots in regulation (13-11 in favor of Marywood), 90 minutes was not enough to produce a goal, and the game headed to overtime thanks to five saves by Coyle and six by Edwards.

Kolla would end the game with 5:06 remaining in the game by running onto a thru-ball and finishing it to the far post past Coyle.

Marywood's 14 wins on the year ties a program record set by the 2003 team and their 15-game unbeaten streak in which they went 14-0-1 set a program record as well.
