Scranton, PA – Marywood University built a 21-point second half lead and held off a late Misericordia rally to notch a 74-63 win over the Cougars in non-conference women's basketball action on Monday evening. The Pacers remain unbeaten on the season, pushing their record to 7-0 while Misericordia falls to 5-3
Misericordia led for most of the first 10 minutes of Monday's match-up, but CSAC Player of the Week Mariah Schaeffer (Bainbridge, NY) tied the score at 19-19 on a three-pointer with 10:11 to play in the half. A Lauren Rogan (Archbald, PA) jumper 19 seconds later gave Marywood a lead that they would stretch to 12 points going into halftime, 45-33
Schaeffer led Marywood with 11 first-half points. The Pacers, who shot 55.9 percent from floor in the opening half, got nine first-half points from Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) and eight from Amanda Lass (Brackney, PA).
Marywood extended their lead to a game-high 21 points at 65-44 with 7:06 to play on a Maggie Farrell (Telford, PA) lay-up, but the Cougars battled back and cut Marywood's lead to just six points, 67-61 after Christine Marks converted a pair of free throws with one minute remaining. Farrell would hit four key free throws in the in the final minute to help secure the win for the Pacers.
Schaeffer and Green each finished with 13 points to lead Marywood, who connected on 49.2 percent of their attempts from the floor on the night. Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) netted 11 points and fell a rebound shy of a double-double, ending the evening with a team-best nine boards. Rogan was the fourth Pacer in double-figures, tallying 10 on the evening.
Misericordia was led by Marks, who finished with a double-double on game-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Sykes scored 12 points and Jesse Robinson dropped in 11 for the Cougars, who shot 44.4 percent from the floor for the game. Vanessa Wright contributed 10 points in a losing effort for Misericordia.
Marywood returns to action on Thursday evening when the travel to Doylestown for a non-conference game against Delaware Valley College. The Pacers' final game of the fall semester is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
