BOX SCORE

Ft. Pierce, FL – Marywood University let a four-run lead slip away from them in the bottom of the ninth inning as Elizabethtown College rallied to score five runs in the last frame to secure a 10-9 win over the Pacers in Marywood's season opener Sunday evening in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Marywood fell to 0-1 with the loss while the Blue Jays evened their mark at 1-1.

Marywood built a 6-2 lead through the first seven innings behind a strong effort from senior starting pitcher Korey Evans (Goshen, NY). Evans allowed just two runs through seven, but tired in the eighth as Elizabethtown was able to score three times to cut the Marywood lead to 6-5 after eight full. Evans, who struck out three on the day, was replaced by Josh Plisko (Moosic, PA) who closed the Blue Jay rally.

Marywood answered with three more runs in the top half of the ninth after several Blue Jay miscues to extend their lead to 9-5, but freshman Rick Clifford (Scranton, PA) walked five batters to start the ninth. E-town's first runner of the inning, who walked, was thrown out attempting to steal, but Clifford walked four consecutive to make it a 9-6 game. Joseph Valvano (Katonah, NY) then came in to close the game for the Pacers and allowed two hits, including the winning runs, to be charged with the loss.

Senior catcher Pat Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) led the Pacer bats with a 3-5, 3-RBI effort that included a double. Younger brother Joe Diskin was 2-5 with two runs and two stolen bases. Jeff Cleary (Parsippany, NJ) had a triple and an RBI, while Mike Castellano (Brooklyn, NY) had a two-RBI single and a stolen base.

Marywood returns to action Monday evening in Ft. Pierce with a single game against Susquehanna University at 6:00 pm.
