Reading, PA - Freshman Sam Webster set a new school record with 16 strikeouts as visiting Marywood defeated former conference rival Alvernia University 4-3 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon in what was the first game at Alvernia's Angelica Park in Reading.  Marywood's win, which improves their record to 4-9, was also the program's first-ever over a ranked opponent.  Alvernia, which has now lost two straight and falls to 13-7, is ranked #28 in the latest ABCA poll (March 24).

Webster (Coatesville, PA) pitched a complete-game seven hitter en route to his record breaking performance.  The freshman hurler shattered the previous school record of 14 strikeouts for a nine-inning game set by Jeff Williams agaist Neumann College on April 20, 2001.  Webster allowed just one earned run on the day to pick up his first win of the year and even his record at 1-1.

After a scoreless first, the visiting Pacers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.  After a TJ Czerw (Scranton, PA) and advanced to second after a walk and wild pitch, senior Pat Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) connected on a single to left to bring in the first run of the game.  Shane Miller (Scranton, PA) would later score on a wild pitch but the Pacers could do no more damage and would leave three runners stranded as the inning ended.

Marywood extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third when Matt Newcomb (Honesdale, PA) scored on a double-play ball, but the Crusaders answered with a two-run third to make it 3-2 and would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth on RBI fielder's choice.

Marywood, who had seven hits on the day, got the game-winning run in the top of the sixth when freshman Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ) scored on a fielding error.

Ryan Cusomato (Sparta, NJ) was the lone Marywood player to record more than one hit, as the junior designated hitter went 2-3 on the day.  Pat Diskin recorded the lone RBI of the day as a part of his 1-4 day.  Czerw wound up 2-4 with a run scored.

Jeff Smith went 2-5 for the Crusaders, while relief pitcher Jeff Helm took the loss after seven innings of work.

Marywood will look to extend their win streak this weekend as the Pacers play five games over three days.  They begin with a single game at home versus Baptist Bible College at 3:00 pm on Friday.  The Pacers will then play at BBC in a doubleheader slated for Saturday and finish the weekend with a doubleheader at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn, NY) on Sunday.
