Scranton Loses Early Lead but Rallies to Top Marywood, 7-4

Scranton, PA - The University of Scranton lost an early 3-0 lead as Marywood took a 4-3 lead in the seventh but the Royals rallied for four runs in a rain-soaked eighth as they captured a 7-4 win over the host Pacers Wednesday afternoon in Scranton. With the win, the University of Scranton moves two games above .500 to 17-15 while the Pacers fall to 7-19.

Scranton grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first after leadoff batter Chris Stallone was hit by a pitch to start the game, advanced to second on a routine grounder then stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly to right by Chris Psihoules. In the third, the Royals would double their lead on an RBI single by Charles Comprelli and the visitors would go up 3-0 in the fourth on a RBI double from Chris Velazquez. The Pacers would cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from TJ Czerw (Scranton, PA) which scored Ryan Cusomato (Sparta, NJ) who had reached on a two-out throwing error.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Marywood rally continued as the Pacers reclaimed a 4-3 lead. With two outs in the inning, Pat Diskin (Clarks Summit, PA) walked and Ed Zakrzewski (Three Bridges, NJ) doubled to put runners on second and third. Cusomato then picked up two RBI with a single to left and would come home to give the Pacers the lead on a Matt Newcomb (Honesdale, PA) double to left center.

As the rain began to fall in the eighth, the Royals mounted a comeback of their own after an opening walk and a bunt single. A Comprelli sacrifice fly would tie the game at 4-4, and Scranton pinch-hitter Richard Raiani would give the Royals the lead for good with a two-run single to left. A Valazquez sac fly to right would score Chris Bligh for the game's final run.

John Rogers picked up the win on the mound for Scranton after 1.1 innings of relief work. Rogers struck out two of the four batters he faced. Starter Mike Sidlowski pitched 6.2 innings and scattered eight hits and allowd three earned runs. Rocky Sawyer moved from third to the mound to get his second save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth.

Mike Siciliano (Whippany, NJ) took the loss for the Pacers, falling to 0-3 on the year after 7.1 innings of work. Siciliano struck out three and was relieved by Joe Valvano (Katonah, NY), who went 1.2 innings and allowed one run.

Marywood returns to action Friday with a single game at Neumann College in Aston, PA at 3:00 pm.
