Gwynedd Completes Sweep of Pacers

Gwynedd Valley, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy College used a six-run eighth inning to extend what was already a six run lead and the Griffins went on to beat visiting Marywood 14-2 in CSAC baseball action Wednesday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley.  The Griffins, who improved to 15-7 (6-0 CSAC) completed the regular season sweep of the Pacers with the win, dropping Marywood to 6-13 (0-3 CSAC).

Senior captain Matt Newcomb (Honesdale, PA) went 3-4 with a double for Marywood but was the lone Pacer to record multiple hits off Gwynedd's Sean Middleton, who pitched a complete-game.  Middleton went nine full innings, allowing no earned runs while striking out six to collect the win.  Marywood's Ryan Cusomato, serving as designated hitter for the game, went 1-4 with an RBI double.

Marywood plated the first run of the game in the second as Newcomb scored on a fielding error to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.  GMC responded, however, plating two runs in the second, third and fourth innings.  The Griffins went up 8-2 with a two-run seventh, then plated six in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Alex Magid (South Salem, NY) fell to 1-2 on the year after taking the loss on the mound.  Magid tossed five full innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits while striking out two.  Tim Freda (Westbury, NY) pitched the final three innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out three.

Marywood returns to action Monday when they host Keystone College in a doubleheader slated for a 12:00 pm start.
