Edwardsville, PA – Wilkes University freshman Joe Brennan scored with 1:18 remaining in the first overtime period to give the Colonels a 1-0 win over visiting Marywood University in the season opener for both teams on Tuesday afternoon.

The first half of Tuesday's non-conference contest saw neither team able to find the net. The Pacers, who held a 7-4 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, had their best opportunity come off the foot of Anthony Kapp (Duncannon, PA) whose volley from 18 yards out sailed just wide of the far post midway through the half.

Each team generated several chances in the second half, with Marywood holding a 9-5 advantage in shots. With just over five minutes to play, the Pacers' Ryan Jones (Holland, PA) drilled a free kick off the post and 90 minutes expired without a goal.

After being out-shot 16-9 during regulation, Wilkes took the only four shots of overtime, the final one being the game-winner off the foot of Brennan in the 99th minute of play. The Colonels' Troy Gibson flicked a header behind the Pacers' defense and Brennan's one-time shot found the side-netting behind Marywood goalkeeper Jared El Gayeh (Baldwin, NY).

Marywood finished the game with a 16-13 advantage in shots while Wilkes held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Kaleb Smith made four saves to notch the shutout while El Gayeh made two stops for the Pacers.

Marywood will travel to Townson, MD on Friday for the first round of the Goucher College Soccer Classic where the Pacers will take on the host Gophers at 7:30 p.m. The winner will take on the winner of the DeSales University-Randolph College match in Saturday's championship game at 8:00 p.m. with the losers meeting in the consolation match at 6:00 p.m.
