Wilkes-Barre, PA– Greg DeMaio and Joe Bender scored goals to give host King's College a 2-0 lead and held on to pick up a 2-1 victory over Marywood University in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday evening at McCarthy Stadium in the Betzler Athletic Complex. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 4-1 on the season while the Pacers fall to 1-3-1.
King's took a 1-0 lead at just over 10 minutes into the contest when Greg DeMaio broke through the center of Marywood's defense and scored from 15 yards out off a feed from George Genco. The Monarchs would hold the single goal lead at halftime after out-shooting the Pacers 8-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play.
King's was able to extend their lead to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when Joe Bender found the back of the net off an assist from Brian McElroy.
With 24 seconds remaining in the game, Marywood's Lee Powers (Mill Hall, PA) drew a foul in the Monarch box to set up a penalty kick. Ryan Jones (Holland, PA) had his penalty kick saved by King's goalkeeper Tim Kelly but drilled home the rebound for his first collegiate goal.
King's finished with a 12-6 advantage in shots for the game and held a 5-0 edge in corner kicks. Kelly made four saves for Kings while Marywood goalkeeper Jared El Gayeh (Baldwin, NY) turned aside six shots.
Marywood returns to their home field this Saturday for a non-conference game against Delaware Valley College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Scranton.
