Scranton, PA - Maggie Brittain made a key defensive save in the opening half and then added an insurance goal in the second half to help lift Marywood University to a 2-0 win over visiting Moravian College Thursday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action. The win was the first for a Marywood team on the Pacers new synthetic turf field as Marywood won their season debut. The Greyhounds fell to 1-1 with the loss.

Moravian came out on the attack in the first half, out-shooting the hosts 6-3 in the opening 35-minutes, but could not find the back of the net as freshman net-minder Jamie Bowman (Cheshire, CT) made four stops. Brittain made perhaps the nicest save of the first half, stopping a Vita Ranella shot that escaped Bowman before it crossed the line, giving the junior defender her first defensive save of the year.

With the scored tied 0-0 at the half, Marywood came out the aggressor in the second frame and capitalized just over 11-minutes in. Junior midfielder Brittany Beaton (Fleetwood, PA) capitalized on a scramble in front of the Greyhound net and put home a loose ball for her first goal of the season. Brittain then followed with her goal just over four minutes later as she scored in nearly the same fashion at the 50:22 mark.

From there, the Greyhounds pressed and picked up several dangerous scoring chances but could not put a shot on net despite six second half penalty corners. For the game, Moravian out-shot the hosts by a 9-5 margin and held a 9-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Marywood will next play host to the University of Scranton on Labor Day. The Pacers and Royals are set to do battle Monday at 4:00 pm.
