Volleyball Drops Opener in King's Tournament

Wilkes-Barre, PA - Wilkes University raced out to a 2-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win as the Colonels defeated Marywood University in the season opener for the Pacers at the King's College Volleyball tournament Friday evening in Scandlon Gymnasium.  Wilkes won by scores of 25-14, 25-14, 25-27 and 25-21.

Wilkes (2-0) was coming off an earlier 3-0 win over Misericordia University in their season opener at the 5:00 pm match.  Against the Pacers, the Colonels took advantage of numerous miscues by Marywood, which hit -.007 for the match. The Pacers collected 31 kills in the match, but the Lady Colonels took advantage of 32 attack errors and 12 service miscues.

Wilkes had an opportunity to sweep the Pacers leading 24-23 in the third game, but a Wilkes attack error tied the game at 24. Emily Fillman gave Marywood a 25-24 lead until Wilkes tied the game at 25 with a kill from the back row. Marywood would score the final two points of the game to push a game four.

In the fourth and final game, the Lady Colonels tallied nine kills, six of which came from Harrison and 21 digs.  Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) led the Pacers with eight kills and three solo blocks, while Alyssa Hartranft (Mountaintop, PA) had 20 of Marywood's 26 assists on the night.

Marywood (0-1) will do battle with Mt. St. Mary College of Newburgh, New York at 8:45 pm Friday before returning to Wilkes-Barre Saturday to face Misericordia University and the host Monarchs.
