Marywood Tops King’s for First Win

Wilkes-Barre, PA – Marywood University rallied after dropping the opening set to host King's College 25-21 to win three straight matches and claim their first victory of 2009 with a 3-1 triumph over the Monarchs at the annual King's College Volleyball Tournament in Wilkes-Barre. Marywood, who dropped both their matches Friday night, improves to 1-2 on the young season while the Monarchs slipped to 2-1.

After falling behind and losing the opener, Marywood took control and won by scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21 in the next three matches to put away King's. Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) and Emily Fillman (Clarion, PA) each had big nights on the offensive end, with Fillman registering 15 kills and Green 14. Taryn Borden (Bridgewater, NJ) also had 10 kills to help the Pacers' offense come alive.

Riona Corr (Somersworth, NH) had 41 assists on the day against King's, while Fillman and Arielle Cassidy (Garwood, NJ) combined for 43 of Marywood's 90 digs.

For King's, Kaitlyn Malshefski led the way with 21 kills and 11 digs. Danielle Belfanti added 24 digs and 12 service points. Emily Kline tallied eight kills while Kelly Greenway distributed 33 assists. Against Wilkes, Malshefski posted 12 kills while Belfanti registered 29 digs. Kline had five kills while Greenway tallied 24 assists. Jillian Foster chipped in with 12 digs.

Marywood closes the King's Tournament later today with a match against former conference foe Misericordia University.
