Scranton, PA – The University of Scranton shook off a slow start to defeat cross-town neighbor Marywood University 3-1 on Tuesday evening in non-conference volleyball action at the Long Center. With the win, the Royals even their record at 1-1 while the Pacers fall to 1-4 on the young season.

Scranton's Jenell McFadden hit .296, with nine kills and three service aces, and senior outside hitter Marie Newkirk had eight kills as the Royals presented first-year head coach Kelly Armes with her first career victory.

The Royals also received seven kills from Kelly Zimmermann and a combined 10 kills, 17 digs and eight service aces from outside hitter Julia Kropf and outside hitter Emily Keim. Juli Woods contributed 28 assists and defensive specialist Marissa Every finished with a match-high 16 digs.

Marywood was led by sophomore outside hitter Emily Fillman (Clarion, PA) with nine kills, senior outside hitter Taryn Borden (Bridgewater, NJ) had six kills and 12 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Marin Robinson (South Windsor, CT) and senior middle blocker Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) finished with six kills apiece.

The Royals settled down after committing nine hitting errors in dropping a 25-22 decision in the first set. Scranton then committed only seven hitting errors in taking the next two sets, 25-11 and 25-17. The Pacers, on the other hand, faltered quite a bit after hitting .292 in the first set, committing a combined 14 hitting errors in the next two sets. Scranton built up a five-point lead late in the fourth set and held on for the victory.

Marywood will return to the University of Scranton this weekend as the Pacers will compete in a tournament hosted by the Royals. Marywood will meet Keystone at 6:00 p.m. on Friday evening and Scranton at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Pacers will take on SUNY-IT at noon and Wilkes at 2:00 p.m.
