Pacers Mourn Loss of Paul Johnson

Men's Basketball - 1/17/2010 6:21:20 PM

Scranton, PA - Paul Johnson, a volunteer coach with Marywood University's men's basketball team, has passed away.  Johnson suffered an apparant heart attack and could not be revived.  He was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital in Scranton late Saturday night.  Johnson was 42.

Johnson, who was in his second season on Head Coach Eric Grundman's staff, had a storied history of coaching local basketball.   He was the first black head basketball coach in the Lackawanna League, compiled a 75-28 career record at Bishop Hannan and led the Golden Lancers to the PIAA Class A Final in 2006.  Johnson was also a member of John Bucci's staff that took Bishop Hannan to a PIAA runner-up finish in both 1999 and 2000.

A viewing will be held this Wednesday, January 20, from 4-8 pm at McGoff Hughes Funeral Home on Capouse Avenue in Scranton.  Marywood will honor Johnson with a moment of silence prior to their CSAC match-up with Baptist Bible College Monday night at 8:00 pm.
