First Half Goal Lifts Giants Over Pacers

Scranton, PA – Keystone College got a first half goal from Hope Krolewski and made it stand to notch a 1-0 victory over Marywood University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference field hockey game on Wednesday afternoon. The Giants improve to 6-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play while the Pacers fall to 3-8 on the season and 2-4 in the CSAC.

Keystone opened the scoring with 9:28 to play in the first half. Sophomore forward Hope Krolewski collected a loose ball near midfield, then made a long solo run down the center of the Pacers' defense and fired a shot past Marywood goaltender Erin Dawson. The Giants held the 1-0 lead at halftime after out-shooting the Pacers 5-2 in the opening 35 minutes of play.

Marywood was unable to equalize in the second half despite taking seven shots to four for Keystone. Giants' netminder Melinda Moore finished the game with five saves and Keystone also got a defensive save from Christiana Nevers to preserve the shutout victory. Dawson (Jenkintown, PA) recorded five saves in the Pacers' cage for the afternoon.

Both teams finished the name with nine shots apiece with Marywood holding a 6-4 advantage in penalty corners.

The two teams wore pink socks and played with pink balls as the game was part of the nationwide “Play for the Cure” cause to help increase breast cancer awareness.

Marywood returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Immaculata University to take on the Mighty Macs in a CSAC game slated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
