Scranton, PA – DeSales University got a goal from Jamie Matthews with just 3:09 to play to lift the Bulldogs to a 1-0 victory over Marywood University in non-conference field hockey action on Monday night. With the win, DeSales improves to 7-8 on the season while the Pacers' record slides to 3-10.
DeSales had the first scoring chance just under ten and a half minutes into the game when Amy Pulcini took a shot towards an open Marywood cage, but Julie Dougherty (Wading River, NY) came across to make a defensive save to keep the game scoreless. Pacers' goalie Jamie Bowman (Cheshire, CT) turned aside eight Bulldog shots in the first half to keep the score level at 0-0 at halftime.
DeSales saw Bowman make five more saves in the second half before finally solving the sophomore netminder with just 3:09 to play. Sam Lavin sent a pass to Matthews who scored from close range to the near post to give the Bulldogs the game's only goal.
The Bulldogs held a 17-0 advantage in shots for the game and had 19 penalty corners to two for the Pacers. Victoria DelToro picked up the shutout win without making a save while Bowman finished the evening with 11 saves in the Pacers net.
Marywood returns to action on Saturday when the host Neumann University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Scranton.
