Aston, PA – Mariah Schaeffer scored a season-high 23 points but it wasn't enough as Marywood University dropped a 72-58 decision to Neumann University in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Monday evening. The Knights improve to 5-4 on the season and 3-0 in conference play with the win while the Pacers, who had their five-game winning streak snapped, fall to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the CSAC.
The two teams traded the lead several times in the first half and Marywood's Lauren Rogan (Archbald, PA) knotted the score at 20-20 by draining a three-pointer with 6:59 left on the clock. Neumann responded with a 14-6 run over the next five and a half minutes to hold a 34-26 lead after Sami Borcky hit a pair of free throws. The hosts would hold a 35-29 lead at halftime after shooting 35 percent from the floor in the period while getting 11 points from Krista Diromualdo. Marywood shot 36 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play and were led by Mariah Schaeffer's (Bainbridge, NY) 17 points. The Knights owned the glass in the first half, out-rebounding the Pacers by a 30-16 margin.
A quick, 6-0 run by Marywood to start the second half tied the game at 35-apiece. The Pacers would reclaim the lead at 39-38 on a Schaeffer lay-up with 16:42 to play. Neumann forged back in front six minutes later Cecily Scavicchio hit the backend of a pair of free throws, a lead the Knights stretched to 12 points with 2:19 remaining. Marywood was unable to pull closer than nine points down the stretch and had their five-game winning streak snapped.
Diromualdo, Scavicchio, Erica Marvel, and Katie Young all had 14 points to lead Neumann, who also got 11 points from Bethany Humenik. Young added a game-high 14 rebounds to complete her double-double. The Knights shot 36.1 percent from the field for the game, 42.9 percent from three-point range, and 70.4 percent from the free throw line.
Schaeffer finished the evening with a season-high 23 points for Marywood on 10-20 shooting from the floor including a 2-4 effort from beyond the arc. Rogan had 12 points while Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) finshed the evening with 10 points and led the squad with seven rebounds. Marywood shot 36.6 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc, and was 2-5 from the charity stripe.
Marywood returns to action on Thursday evening when they play host to Lebanon Valley College in a non-conference game scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Insalaco Arena. The Dutchman are currently ranked 24th in the nation and will bring a 7-1 record to Scranton.
