Rosemont, PA – After beating Rosemont College by 37 points just over two weeks ago, Marywood University women's basketball team needed overtime to get past the Ravens Monday night as the Pacers picked up a 70-65 win in CSAC action. With the win, Marywood improves to 15-5 overall and 9-2 in conference play while the Rosemont falls to 6-15 on the season and 4-9 in the CSAC.
After falling to the Pacers 64-27 on January 23rd, Rosemont came out with a vengeance and would hold a six-point halftime lead, 32-26, after shooting 35.5 percent from the floor in the first half including 40 percent from three point range. Marywood struggled from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, connecting on just 25 percent of their shots.
The Pacers would eventually climb back into the game and Arielle Chard (Woodstown, NJ) would tie the game at 52-52 by converting a pair of free throws with 6:37 to play. Maggie Farrell (Telford, PA) put Marywood ahead on a lay-up 20 seconds later. The two teams continued their tight battle the rest of the way. With the Pacers holding a 61-58 lead with a minute to play, Rosemont's Karen Boyle was fouled on a three-point attempt and proceeded to convert all three free throws to knot the game and send it to overtime.
Marywood's Marilee Sobrinski (Ocean City, NJ) opened the overtime period with a three-pointer, giving the visiting Pacers a lead they would not relinquish as Marywood outscored Rosemont 9-4 in the five-minute overtime frame to secure their 15th win of the season.
Lizzy Green (Shenandoah, PA) led all scorers with 20 points after shooting 6 of 13 from the floor and 8 of 11 from the free throw line while pulling down 7 rebounds. Mariah Schaffer (Bainbridge, NY) contributed 12 points while Lauren Rogan (Archbald, PA) finished with 10 in the win. Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to lead Marywood while adding eight points, eight assists, and four steals.
Rosemont was led by Ashley Montecchio's 15-point, eight-rebound effort. Kate Clarkson and Christa Bednarek each scored 12 points for the Ravens, who got a game-high 14 rebounds from Vanessa Johnson.
Marywood returns home on Wednesday to play Philadelphia Biblical University in a CSAC contest that was postponed from Saturday. The Pacers, a perfect 10-0 in the Insalaco Arena this season, will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. against the Crimson Eagles.
